hay all,

Well this is going to sound strange, but my jaws locking code has changed three times in windows 7 since I installed it. it seems as if every restart brings with it a new locking code. this means that my activation for the first locking code just does not work any more. This doesn't make any sense and its not like I have an unlimited number of activations to be used here. I am dool booting windows xp and win 7 on two separate drives. Could going into xp for some reason change the win 7 locking code? I am using xp pro sp3 and win 7, with jaws 11 installed on the win 7 partition. any help would be greatly apreciated as at the moment I can only use win 7 for 40 minutes at a time!

Ok, what you need to do is call FS's installation tech support, and tell them of this. I have had the exact same problem that you have, and they will wlk you through the exact steps that you need to do to fix it. I'd give you the number that I used when they transferred me over to them, but I don't have my braille plus with me. When you call the tech support, ask for John carson. Just tell him everything that you've done, and he should be able to help you out.

Here is the reason and the fix, or one fix. If you change, or unplug, or switch say a monitor, or a part of the system then the locking code changes, because win 7 sees it as a different machine. So when you duel boot you are switching a major part of the whole. Interesting sure, crazy yes! Lol.The fix is to use online authorization. There is a section at www.fsactivate that you put your locking code in and your 20 digit authorization code. You cand authorize all 3 locking codes if you wish to continue duel booting, so that is works, but the trick is not to change parts of the system, then it stays put. You'll need FS blessing, but you'll get it, because this is a issue with Jaws and 7, but easy to fix. You must copy and paste the code you'll receive in to the box in Jaws. Instructions are also found on the FS activate page. Call that number for more detailed help if you require it.

Peace.

thanks for all the help. Are you saying therefore that I have to use all three bloody locking authorisation keys on one machine? If so that is a serious flaw in the fs activation process that they need to address. I plug and unplug harddrives and soundcards all the time, so how on earth am I to get this to work?

Couldn't he get a dongle, or does a dongle have nothing to do with the locking code?

dongles are useful (seeing that I have one), but they waist one of your USB ports which is a major drawback. Most laptops have 3 USB ports and a dongle leaves you with 2 left. I have a DVD drive for instance which uses both ports to draw power.

But yeah, dongles are not locking-code dependent so it would always work. I suppose on a desktop it's useful more because they usually have 4-6 USB ports and you can get an external keyboard that uses ps/2 and has builtin USB ports as well.

It won't do it if you use an external drive, for instance, my locking code will only change if I plug in my webcam. I'm not sure if this was fixed in the latest jaws update 11.0.746, I haven't tried it yet. I'd call that number first, then try out forreal's suggestion.

How do you get one of those dongals, and what's the requirements for getting one?

To The Lil Dark Piggy,

I got mine becauseI told FS that I used the copy of Jaws on more than one machine. I didn't get it in time when I was in school, going for my bachelors degree. They're really touchy when it comes to giving them out, sometimes. And the dongle upgrade is $50.

The code only changes if you undo a video source, or a major part. As posted this may have been fixed with 0746, do to the video issue, but I also haven't tested it. I can dis connect my webcam with no problem, but a monitor, or changing hard drive configurations makes the machine different, so sure you can do all 3 codes and it works smoothly.
